about

"Channelling a watery emotional catharsis, you’ll fall at the feet of Mcrobin after hearing his blissful new EP Shallow Diver" - Happy Mag (Premiere)

------

After a year-long interim, Melbourne based Alt-Folk Singer-Songwriter, James McGuffie (AKA Mcrobin) is ready to unveil his sophomore EP, ‘Shallow Diver’.

The release exposes a much more refined band sound and it’s clear across the five tracks that after a year of playing and writing together Mcrobin and his band have really hit their stride.

The first single, ‘Concrete Feet’ (launched to a packed room at The Wesley Anne in September), gave us the first taste of just how far Mcrobin’s songwriting has come since releasing his first EP in 2015. "This song has tones that feel inspired by Fleetwood Mac with a sprinkle of Leonard Cohen (when he’s in a really good mood). We’re just about ready to take this to our local hangout and request they put it on repeat.” AAA-Backstage

Themes of numbness and disconnect are at the forefront across the five songs of this release. James writes; “the songs came from a realisation I made, that I have a relatively low emotional awareness; feeling like my ability to experience and express my emotions was really limited.” These gloomy prospects are most prominent in the slow-burning title track ‘Shallow Diver’ and the jarring ‘Fine Lie'. Despite this, moments of acceptance and surrender rear their heads in the nakedness of the Cohen-esque ballad, ‘Periphery’ and the driving and cinematic EP closer, ‘Steal My Only’, providing glimmers of hope and optimism.

It was these ideas that prompted Mcrobin to sign up for Movember. James says, “After watching the Man Up TV Series documentary on ABC a couple of months ago, it seemed that my experience was similar (and fortunately less severe), to the experience of a lot of men. Participating in the Movember campaign felt like an obvious thing to do to help raise funds for my fellow ‘shallow divers’ out there."

For the launch of this new release, Mcrobin and his band are hosting an exciting and unique event. On Sunday, December 4th, they'll be taking over the Edinburgh Gardens Community Room, turning it into a kind of pop-up venue for the night. If that’s not enticing enough, Mcrobin is making the event a Movember fundraiser, donating 100% of the proceeds from the event and 50% of all CD sales on the day to the foundation.

Come and embrace the first Sunday of Summer in Northside's favourite (alcohol friendly) park, for a kind of house concert/ venue hybrid event unlike any other. With supports from songsmith mickey cooper and new indie-rockers, Maritime, you’ll be hearing from three outstanding and unique artists, as well as supporting an important and worthy cause.

*You can keep an eye on Mcrobin’s sincere but somewhat hopeless attempts at mo-growing across all of his socials this month.
